I’m not claiming to be a fashion leader but… I was sporting a waistcoat and long hair years before they came round again as a fashion. More importantly, I was savouring the subtle complexities and hidden delights of quality gin long, long, before the recent resurgence of this most noble of drinks and the subsequent explosion in popularity.
It has been noted that I’ve travelled a bit. Well, a lot. And on those travels, I’ve seldom missed an opportunity to absorb elements of the local culture as well as the landscape. And few things have a bigger, broader, more rooted story of a place than the spirits created by those who live there. Crafted drinks are products not just of the people but of the place where they live. In the case of gin, with all the opportunities it brings for subtlety, nuance and surprise using botanicals that tell the story of the place where they grow, this is even more powerful, if you pay attention.
That’s where my journey with Hammond’s Ratio truly began. I didn’t want to put my name to something; I wanted to create it. It had to embody something of the joys of travel; boldness, adventure, a sense of place, but call me vain, I wanted it to say something about me, too. So, I teamed up with Hawkridge Distillers, the masters behind The World’s Best London Dry Gin, to create a partnership rooted in excellence.

Whisky is about companionship and discovery. A story told over a glass of something wonderful is a story told in a setting chosen by storyteller and listener. Beyond the story told, the whisky is a journey, an exploration of craftsmanship, tradition, and character. Growing up in England, I was captivated by the rich history and the quiet artistry behind every bottle. Whisky has always been a companion to me - whether in moments of quiet reflection, shared laughter with friends, or simply enjoying a rare pause from the noise of life.
The journey to create my own whisky was fuelled by the desire to craft something truly authentic and personal. I was deeply involved in every detail, from selecting premium casks to overseeing each step of the design process, pouring my heart and soul into every bottle. I didn’t want to simply put my name on a product; I wanted it to be a passionate reflection of who I am - my love for adventure, detail, and excellence. The reverse image I call the Iron Ridge, it’s the view from my garden in the Lake District which we had redrawn specifically for the bottle, it symbolises my connection to nature and the thrill of exploration. This landscape is a vivid reminder of my zest for life and discovery.
Every step along the path to a special whisky brings challenges and choices. Sourcing truly special casks - the kind that turn a good whisky into something unforgettable - is no easy feat. I had the privilege of working with one of the finest distillers in the country, someone I knew could help bring this dream to life and expand my connection to the very heart of whisky making.
And then came a moment I never dared imagine. In 2026, Iron Ridge was named Best English Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards - one of the biggest awards in the industry. I'm still pinching myself. When I started this journey, I just wanted to create something I was proud of. To be recognised on a stage like this, among whiskies I've long admired, is beyond anything I could have dreamed. It's a humbling reminder that passion, patience and an obsession with getting the details right can lead somewhere extraordinary. Here's hoping this is just the beginning.
